TL;DR

I’m currently looking to break into product design, so as a side project I designed and prototyped a new feature that is seamlessly integrated within the current Netflix desktop site. The feature allows users to create a list of movies and TV shows that combines both users’ tastes.

I conducted in-depth research about Netflix’s placement within the video streaming services industry, Netflix’s competitors, and interviewed 6 individuals via Google Forms to get a sense of the ways that Netflix is both succeeding and needs improvement in. From these insights, I hypothesized possible ways to improve the Netflix experience for users. I developed user journey maps, a sitemap, paper wireframes, medium-fidelity wireframes, and a high-fidelity prototype using an iterative approach.

Challenge

Netflix’s customer value proposition is to provide its users with quality entertainment, including a wide taste of content, unlimited streaming access, personalized recommendations, and more. With new additions like the trending movie list on the homepage and the New & Popular tab, Netflix is focusing on making it easier for users to choose new content to consume. However, no video streaming service companies (including Netflix) have a way to make it easier for two or more people to decide what to watch.
